Racconti di viaggio: Nanaimo, Vancouver Island, Canada 2008

Dopo aver respirato, almeno per un pò, la vita di Vancouver, era ormai arrivato il momento di avviarci verso una nuova, stupenda destinazione, Nanaimo.

Si tratta della seconda città più grande di Vancouver Island, 110 km a nord-ovest di Victoria.

Il principale punto di riferimento per i turisti è il porto interno, mentre il centro della città si trova alle sue spalle, i negozi principali sono situati in Commercial St. e Terminal Ave.

L' Old City Quarter è situato sulla collina ed è stato ristrutturato da poco acquisendo il fascino delle città del secolo passato.

La mattina del quinto giorno insomma, zaino in spalla e valigia alla mano, dopo una colazione veloce offerta dall'HI Vancouver Central, ci siamo dirette verso la stazione dei pulman e una volta salite a bordo abbiamo osservato il paesaggio fino al porto.

Abbiamo preso la Greyhound Canada da Vancouver a Nanaimo con un costo inferiore ai 20$ a testa.

Una volta al porto ci stava aspettando un traghetto, incluso nel prezzo, che ci avrebbe portato a destinazione. Questo, dotato di ampie vetrate, ha permesso a tutti i suoi passeggeri di godersi la traversata e non eravamo in pochi a cercare di avvistare qualche balena, ahimè senza risultati. Tuttavia non ci siamo fatti mancare una buona merenda e un'occhiata al negozio di souvenir.

Ebbene si finalmente eravamo arrivati!

Di nuovo sul pulman, dopo circa altri 10 minuti, ci siamo fermate alla stazione di Nanaimo, dove un ragazzo Norvegese è stato così gentile da accompagnarci fino all' ostello dal momento che il suo pulman non sraebbe partito prima di mezz'ora.

E' impressionante certe volte la cortesia delle persone e la voglia di conoscere e scambiare qualche parola con altri viaggiatori provenienti da vari paesi. Nei viaggi successivi mi è successo altre volte di trovare questo clima così amichevole e tranquillo che quando si è lontani da casa fa davvero piacere. Salutato il nostro amico, in partenza per tornare a casa, siamo entrate al Painted Turtle, situato in un edificio ad una manciata di secondi dall'oceano, entrando siamo state accolte da una simpatica receptionist (www.paintedturtle.ca/home.php questo è il sito in cui potete trovare tutte le informazioni circa le prenotazioni e molto altro).

Principalmente l'ostello si sviluppa su piu piani collegati da scale, ognuno dei quali è fornito di 4 bagni e varie camere, che possono essere singole, doppie o piccole camerate da 4/6 posti. I bagni sono nuovi, puliti e comodi e la nostra camera, una doppia, era davvero accogliente.

La stanza comune comprende salone, cucina con 2 frigoriferi, sala da pranzo, zona computer; oltre ad una stanza fornita di lavatrici e asciugatrici.

Una volta posate le valige ci siamo dirette subito verso il porto, e ci siamo imbattute in un simpatico mercatino ricco di prodotti caratteristici e dolci fatti in casa.

Per pranzare però abbiamo camminato un paio di minuti in più, arrivando poco piu in la, dove su una simpatica imbarcazione ormeggiata si trovava uno dei Fish&Chips migliori che abbia mai incontrato, tra l'altro dotato di sconti per gli studenti con tessera CTS. Si tratta del Troller's Fish and Chips e serve assolutamente pesce appena pescato (tel. 250-741-7994; 104 Front St; orario 7-10 pranzo e cena).

Verso sera poi siamo andate a fare un po di spesa per cena, da prepare in ostello in compagnia degli altri turisti.

After soaking, at least for a while, life in Vancouver, it was now time to move towards a new, wonderful destination, Nanaimo.

This is the second largest city of Vancouver Island, 110 km northwest of Victoria.

The main reference point for tourists is the inland port and the center of the city is behind it, all the major stores are located in Commercial St. and Terminal Ave

The morning of the fifth day in short, backpackers and suitcase in hand, after a quick breakfast offered from the HI Vancouver Central, we headed to the bus station and hop on board once we found the landscape to the port.

We took the Greyhound Canada from Vancouver to Nanaimo with a cost less than $ 20 apiece.

Once the port was waiting for a ferry, free of charge, which would take us to destination. This, with large windows allowed all passengers to enjoy the crossing and we were not just trying to spot some whales, alas to no avail. However we have not been missing a good snack and a look at the gift shop.

Well we are finally here!

Back on the bus, after about 10 minutes, we stopped at the station in Nanaimo, where a Norwegian guy was kind enough to take us to the hostel, 'cause he didn' t go away before half an hour.

It 's amazing sometimes courtesy of the people and the desire to know and exchange some words with other travelers from different countries. In followings journeys happened to me sometimes to find this atmosphere so friendly and quiet when you are away from home really enjoyed. Greeted our friend, leaving for home, we entered the Painted Turtle, located in a building with a handful of seconds from the ocean, entering we were greeted by a friendly receptionist (www.paintedturtle.ca / home.php this is the site where you can find all the information about reservations and much more).

Mainly the hostel is spread over several floors connected by stairs, each of which has 4 bathrooms and several rooms, which can be single, double and small dorms with 4 / 6 seats. The bathrooms are new, clean and comfortable and our room, a double, was very welcoming.

The common room includes lounge, kitchen with 2 fridges, dining room, computer area, plus a room equipped with washing machines and dryers.

Once you drop your luggage we headed straight for the harbor, we came across a nice market full of characteristic products and homemade desserts.

For lunch we walked a few more minutes, reaching a little farther on, where a nice boat moored, was one of the best fish and chips I've ever met and with discounts for students with CTS card.

This is the Troller's Fish and Chips and serves very fresh fish (tel. 250-741-7994, 104 Front St, lunch and dinner 7-10 hours).

Towards evening, then we went to do some shopping for dinner, to prepare at hostel in the company of other tourists.

Proprio davanti a questa graziosa città si trovano due delle sue più importanti attrattive, Newcastle island e Gabriola Island; il sesto giorno avevamo deciso di visitare quest'ultima, cosi dopo una buona colazione abbiamo comprato il biglietto per il traghetto della BC Ferries (per due adulti 15,80 $, dunque 7,90 $ a testa); tra l'altro con la simpatica compagnia di uno dei traghettatori abbiamo passato quei 10 minuti davvero in modo piacevole. Arrivate a Gabriola abbiamo passeggiato per un po, la natura è davvero magnifica come potete vedere dalle foto sottostanti, tuttavia ci siamo ben presto rese conto che non è un'isola facile da visitare a piedi, se avete una macchina o delle biciclette risulta sicuramente piu semplice arrivare nei vari punti di interesse. Così, dal momento che ci trovavamo sfornite di un mezzo di trasporto, ci siamo dirette verso la zona commerciale dell'isola ma poco prima abbiamo incontrato un'altro mercatino dove vi erano oggetti di tutti tipi, dai vestiti dipinti, a gioielli fatti a mano anche del valore di 130$, a cibarie gustosissme e dipinti di artisti del luogo (infatti l'isola è famosa per ospitare una comunità di artisti che vi risiede); non bisogna dimenticare l'esposizione di macchine agricole antiche!

Just before this lovely city are two of its major attractions, Newcastle Island and Gabriola Island, the sixth day we decided to visit it, so after a good breakfast we bought the ticket for the ferry BC Ferries (for two Adults $ 15.80, then $ 7.90 each), among others with the good company of a ferryman we spent those 10 minutes really so nice. Arrive at Gabriolawe walked for a while, nature is really beautiful, as you can see from the photos below however we soon realized that is not an island easy to explore on foot, if you have a car or bicycle is surely simpler to arrive at the various points of interest. So, since we were without a transport, we headed to the shopping area of the island but just before we met another market where there were all kinds of items, with clothes painted on handmade jewelry also worth $ 130, groceries and paintings by local artists (in fact the island is famous for hosting a community of artists who live there), do not forget the display of antique farm machinery!

Abbiamo pranzato in una splendida locanda proprio vicino ai negozi e, mi raccomando, dovete assaggiare la zuppa di pomodori, non solo il cibo è favoloso ma i proprietari sono persone gradevolissime.

We had lunch in a beautiful inn right next to the shops and I recommend you try the soup of tomatoes, not only the food is fabulous but the owners are very pleasant people.

Dopo pranzo siamo tornate al traghetto, così di nuovo su Vancouver Island, abbiamo deciso di visitare la città.

After lunch we returned to the ferry, so again on Vancouver Island, we decided to visit the city.

Il"Bastion Nanaimo Museum", aperto nell'estate del 2008, all'angolo tra Front St. e Bastion St; era una struttura difensiva, costruita nel 1853 dall' Hudson's Bay Company, per contrastare gli attacchi dei nativi delle First Nations ma poi utilizzato solo per sparare qualche colpo di cannone per calmare i tumulti.

Ancora oggi il cannone spara un colpo tutti i giorni a mezzagiorno.

Il museo è aperto ogni giorno dalle 10 am alle 4pm durante i mesi di giugno luglio e agosto, mentre l'orario limitato a maggio e settembre. Per maggiori informazioni potete contattare il museo al 250-753-1821 o potete visitare il sito web www.nanaimomuseum.ca .

The "Bastion Nanaimo Museum, opened in summer 2008, at the corner of Front St. and St. Bastion, was a defensive structure, built in 1853 by 'Hudson's Bay Company, to counter attacks of the native First Nations but then used only to fire a few cannon shot to calm the riots.

Even today, the cannon fires a shot every day at 12.00 in the morning.

Se avete un po di tempo passeggiare per la città è davvero un bel modo per passare un paio d'ore.

If you have a bit of time walking around the city is a really nice way to spend a couple of hours.

Vi sono negozi di tutti i tipi, con marche più conosciute come Vans, Billabong ad altre meno note ma davvero carine, negozi di CD nuovi e\o usati a prezzi davvero convenienti, o di perline per gioielli fai da te.

Non mancano sul lungomare negozi di souvenir dove comprare le cartoline o caffetterie favolose.

La sera abbiamo optato di nuovo per la cena in ostello, dove si è cucinato tutti insieme e un signore oltre a prestarmi il formaggio per i miei cheeseburger mi ha insegnato nuove ricette per i miei piatti!

Il 7° giorno sarebbe stato interamente dedicato a "Newcastle Island" e così presi i biglietti per l' Harbourferry siamo arrivate sull' isola (info su www.nanaimoharbourferry.com). Newcastle Island ha un perimetro di circa 8 km e noi non ce ne siamo fatte mancare neppure un metro!! Ovviamente sono presenti anche sentieri più brevi di circa 1 km. A piedi avrete la possibilità di ammirare paesaggi bellissimi seguire sentieri stupendi, per poi riposare un po al sole su scogli che cadono direttamente nell'oceano, e con la bassa marea potrete camminare sulla lingua di terra che collega Newcastle ad un'altra isola vicino, tra stelle marine di vari colori.

There are shops of all types, with known brands like Vans, Billabong other less known but really nice, new CD stores and / or used at reasonable prices, or beads for jewelry.

Do not miss the promenade souvenir shops where to buy postcards or fabulous cafes.

In the evening we opted again for dinner in the hostel, where it cooked together and a gentleman as well as lend the cheese on my cheeseburger taught me new recipes for my dishes!

The 7th day was dedicated to "Newcastle Island" and so we took the tickets for 'Harbourferry and we got on' island (info on www.nanaimoharbourferry.com). Newcastle Island has a perimeter of about 8 km and we are not there without missing even a meter! Obviously there are also paths shorter than 1 km. On foot you can admire beautiful landscapes stunning follow paths, then a rest in the sun on rocks that fall directly into the ocean, and at low tide you can walk on the spit of land that connects Newcastle to another island near by including sea stars of various colors.

Potrete avvistare aquile reali, cerbiatti, lontre, orsetti lavatori, castori e altri tipi di volatili.

You can spot eagles, deer, otters, raccoons, beavers and other birds.

L' importante è che partiate gia forniti di una mappa dell'isola, acqua e cibo perchè l'unico punto di ristoro lo inconterete all'inizio della vostra escursione, il Pavillon.

It' s really important that lots already equipped with a map of the island, water and food because the only place to eat it's at the beginning of your trip: "the Pavillon".

L' ottavo giorno non potevamo farci mancare Westwood lake!! Ci si arriva facilmente, con un bus da prendere poco distante dall'ostello e che fa scendere a 5 minuti dal lago.

E' una meta molto comune per tutti coloro che vogliono fare attività fisica come la corsa in mezzo alla natura, oltre al fatto che l'acqua è meravigliosa e ci si puo fare il bagno se non fa troppo fresco. Anche qui è facile avvistare molti tipi di animali quali gli scoiattoli e vale davvero la pena fare il giro del lago. Non mancano le Canadian Goose che ritroveremo praticamente sempre durante il viaggio.

The eighth day we could not make us miss Westwood Lake! It can be reached

easily by bus to be taken not far from the hostel and that is down to 5 minutes from the lake.

It 's a very common destination for all who want to do physical activity like running in nature, besides the fact that water is wonderful and you can swim if it is not too cool. Here it is easy to spot many kinds of animals such as squirrels and well worth going around the lake. Do not miss the Canadian Goose that almost always end up during the trip.

Purtroppo non ho potuto girare la foto, comunque qui potete vedere l'entrata di "Perkins" una delle più buone caffetterie di Nanaimo dove dovete assolutamente fare colazione sia con i dolci che con le paste salate.

Unfortunately I could not run the photo, however here you can see the entry for "Perkins" one of the best cafes in Nanaimo where you absolutely have to go for the breakfast with both sweet and savory pastries.

Il Bubble Tea, qui sotto, è una bevanda molto di moda in questa zona che purtroppo io personalmente non sono riuscita ad apprezzare a pieno, ma che in molti bevono.

Si tratta di una bibita dietetica di cui potete scegliere il gusto, ghiaccio e gelatine sul fondo.

Bubble Tea, below, is a very fashionable drink in the area and unfortunately I personally have not been able to appreciate fully, but a lot of people drink it.

This is a diet drink which you can choose the taste, jellies and ice.
